What is the purpose of accreditation?

The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that students attending the College of Southern Idaho receive a quality experience in all facets of their education. Every 10 years, the Commission on Colleges and Universities of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges conducts a full-scale evaluation of CSI to ensure that we are providing a quality educational experience for our students and that we are poised to continue to do so in the future.

The College of Southern Idaho received its first accreditation from the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges in 1968. Since that time, the college has been continuously accredited by the Northwest Association on Colleges and Universities.

Students enrolled in the college are assured that their credits are fully accredited by the Northwest Association. Students who wish to transfer their credits to another institution should plan their work according to the requirements of the institution to which they intend to transfer. Educational advising is available to students, but they must assume the responsibility for knowing the requirements of the curriculum in which they will later study.

Who is the Commission on Colleges and Universities of the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges?

According to its web site, “The Commission on Colleges and Universities of the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation as the regional authority on the quality of institutions of higher education in the seven Northwest states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The Commission is responsible for the evaluation and accreditation of eligible public and private colleges, universities, and other institutions of higher education in the Northwest region. An independent, non-profit membership organization, the Commission on Colleges currently serves 156 accredited and candidate institutions throughout the region. The Commission consists of twenty-six members, including a chair and the executive director who is ex-officio.”

Why is the accreditation process important to the College of Southern Idaho?

The 2005 Accreditation visit provides the opportunity for the CSI community to reflect on where we have come since 1965 and where we are headed in the future. It is important for us to take a critical look at ourselves so we can celebrate our success and innovation and continually look for places to improve. On a very practical level, being accredited shows our students that we are a quality institution and allows us to continue to receive federal funds to support teaching, research and student financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education. We will develop a self-study report that addresses the nine standards established by the accrediting agency. The report will be completed by early spring 2005. We will host an accreditation visit in April of 2005.
